The HPCSA approved 22 CPD points for registered healthcare providers attending the 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme.
Health care professionals benefit from this training firstly in terms of their own self-care and stress. A number of studies indicate the positive benefits of mindfulness training on healthcare workers. Goodman and Shorling conclude: ‘A continuing education course based on mindfulness-based stress reduction was associated with significant improvements in burnout scores and mental well-being for a broad range of healthcare providers.’ (A mindfulness course decreases burnout and improves well-being among healthcare providers. Int J Psychiatry Med. 2012;43(2):119-28.)
Healthcare providers also attend the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programme in order to to integrate mindfulness practices into their professional work.
